Celebrating Major League Baseball!

By Andy Dolich

Major League baseball is back after an offseason that was about as
off as off could be. Isn’t it time to look at the bright side of the game? There is a massive opportunity available to the minds that run Major League baseball. All they have to do is follow this simple formula.

Baseball has the longest and richest storytelling history of any sport. Baseball has the largest inventory of games captured by multiple forms of media: feature films, highlights, bloopers, magazines, books, poems, songs, animations, comics, baseball cards, anime, musicals, theater, comedy routines, heroes, heels and Hall of Famers of any sport.

The vast MLB storehouse of content cuts across all media distribution channels today and will continue to grow through future digital innovation.

MLB has failed to organize these powerful message-carrying platforms to strategically market the sport on a local, regional, national and global basis to the multiple demographics that love Major League Baseball and all forms of the game from Tee-Ball to Super Senior leagues.

What did MLB create for their 100th or 150th Anniversaries? Did they maximize the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues. Put those efforts up against the multiplicity of ways the NFL celebrated their 100th Anniversary and the NBA are rolled out for their 75th season.
Clearly the “Field of Dreams” game was a hit but what else have we seen in the last few years from MLB that has resonated from coast to coast?

When is the last time you’ve seen a national advertising campaign featuring a current MLB star?

Why not create the ultimate multi-platform, A-Z smile inducing, jaw dropping, change like a kaleidoscope, happy and at times confounding visual history of baseball. From Abner Doubleday to Outer Space and Beyond!

This media product could be innovatively packaged to maximize fan engagement and sponsor value. This fast paced, high energy, happy, interactive platform can fit into any time frame from a minute to an hour.

Here’s an example from the past that can be easily updated.

Identify a group of thought leaders that have a deep institutional knowledge of the business of baseball, marketing and media. They could maximize the opportunity of creating a multi-media vision that can be marketed to millions of baseball fans at every level re- energizing their love of the game.

It can be easily updated and customized every week, month or season and positioned to focus on special events on the baseball calendar.

Let’s begin to Play Ball.

Jim Nantz World: Golf Groupie
In Jim Nantz World there is only one golfer. TIGER WOODS (rinse and repeat 10 x). We get it -- Tiger's comeback was a great story. (Ironic how such a great golfer never learned to drive.)

But I digress. Obviously Jimbo has an unhealthy obsession with Tiger, so much so that he ignored every other player in the Masters, and
48 Official World Golf Ranking’s top-50 players teed it up!

Jon Rahm -- the No. 1 ranked player in the world didn't make the cut --isn't that a story. What happened?  Wasn't it worth a mention? Brooks Koepka, of Grand Slam stardom and success -- missed the cut! Jordan Spieth won it in 2015, didn't make the cut. Xander Schauffele --
won Olympic gold, didn't make the cut. The infamous Bryson DeChambeau shot an 80 on Friday and missed the cut. So did all the stories behind these popular figures! Phil Mickelson did not play -- never mentioned. Why not? Too sensitive?

No disrespect to Scheffler, Rory, Smith, or Lowry, but they did not Win, Place or Show in this Masters, and their names will not be remembered. Their individual and collective sagas and triumphs had no place in Jim Nantz World, where there was only room for one special golfer's return. Rinse and repeat.

Lawrence Fan Tribute
During the recap of the Celebration of Lawrence Fan’s Life, the writer innocently omitted the name of the very last scheduled speaker, Mark Purdy, a sports columnist for the San Jose Mercury News for 32 years.

Near the end of his talk Purdy suggested that we all thank Fan for his undying support, promotion and love of everything about Spartan Athletics with an overdue and well deserved standing ovation. It lasted for about 30 seconds and it was emotional as well as the cherry on top of the Fan Cake.

Brilliant move by Mark!

The Birth of "Run TMC"
Caption from The San Francisco Examiner: "Pete Elman and his wife, Lisa, celebrate after learning he had the winning entry in The Examiner's Name the Warriors' Trio contest."

My
Memories Of
Run TMC

by Pete Elman

In December 1990, the old San Francisco Examiner, which was combined with the San Francisco Chronicle on Sundays, sponsored a "Name the Warriors Trio" contest.

That exciting threesome of Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway was the league's highest-scoring trio in the NBA that season. And this week Hardaway will join his teammates in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Under Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson, the Warriors played a fast-paced, high-scoring, run-and-gun style; it was prototypical “small-ball.” They averaged 116 points a game, but the problem was they gave up the same amount, often more.

When I opened my Sunday paper that cool morning in December many years ago and saw the contest and it caught my eye. I was—and still am—a huge Warrior fan, and have been since 1974 when I moved to the Bay Area.

The nickname came to me immediately; I thought a name based on their initials might work, and flashed on Chris Mullin's Brooklyn roots and how he loved the seminal rappers Run DMC, who hailed from Queens. Hence "Run TMC" was born.

I had a gut feeling the players would go for it. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later I got the call. The Examiner sent a photographer to my house, and they wrote a piece in the paper. Needless to say I was thrilled.
One of three prizes Elman received, a poster featuring Hardaway, Richmond and Mullin

I received three prizes as my reward: a basketball signed by the team and coach Nelson that I have never dribbled; a full-size poster of the three players looking tough, hanging out in front of a wall in a gritty Oakland cityscape, and tickets to a very unmemorable game against the Denver Nuggets.
I had no idea that 31 years down the road the name would be still alive and kicking. I do remember that a while back the Boston Globe wrote that the trio had "probably the best nickname" ever. Having gone to college in Boston, it was especially gratifying to hear that.

It is incredible to think that those guys only played two years together; in those two seasons, the Warriors were actually below .500, with a cumulative record of 81–83. They never finished higher than fourth place in the Pacific Division, and won one of two playoff series.

Mitch Richmond was traded to Sacramento for Billy Owens on November 1, 1991. "I'd never make that trade again," Nelson said later. But just this past week Tim Hardaway, when asked by a radio host if Nellie ever regretted or apologized for the trade, he laughed and said, “Not yet.” Either way, that was the premature demise of Run TMC.

The Warriors were abysmal for 15 years after that, only to get off the deck when Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Stephen Jackson, Matt Barnes and Monta Ellis delivered momentary thrills with the “We Believe” teams of 2006-08.

Now here it is, another 15 years down the road, and the once laughing stock of the NBA, who back in the day were often described as “the worst franchise in pro sports,” has become an iconic multi-billion dollar brand known the world over—and three-time champs, no less. Who would have thought?

I think the nickname Run TMC has lasted because of the wonderful memories fans have of those three iconic players and the sheer, unselfish joy with which they played. The current Warriors under Steve Kerr, now in his eighth year, have been described as a “team that plays with joy.” Things sometimes do come full circle.

And with the playoffs now here they must look within themselves and channel that joy. Perhaps a trip down memory lane to the fun-filled days of Run TMC just might provide that spark. I, for one, believe.

2022
Season
And My Predictions

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
Amaury Pi-Gonzales on Oct. 3, 2018,
A's vs. Yankees in the Wild Card
The season is here, and even though we just had an abbreviated Spring Training and the CBA negotiations went deep into extra innings, this will be a full 162 games season. And that is great news. Of all other sports, baseball (without a doubt), offers the most fun when it comes to predictions. There are more games, more ups and downs, more drama and great surprises. So here we go!

AL West -- Houston Astros
The more I look at the Seattle Mariners, the more improvement I see all over their roster. I like what they are doing in "Rain City." They are already crowning rookie Julio Rodríguez as the new "J-Rod" and Rookie of the Year. But I have to go with the Houston Astros, although they lost Carlos Correa to the Minnesota Twins. Justin Verlander is returning to the mound and this is a veteran team, with a good skipper who keeps everybody happy and knows how to win in Dusty Baker. I would not be surprised if the Mariners win the division. The Oakland A's have a new look and it will be fun watching some of their recently acquired future stars, but they will not be in this race. They will play the role of spoilers. The last time the A's were in a postseason was in 2018. The Los Angeles Angels line-up (all healthy) might be the most dangerous in baseball, but since Adam and Eve, without pitching nobody has won anything. Noah Syndergaard, aka "Thor," left the Big Apple for the Big A. But the Angelinos need more from the mound. What a waste of a lineup it they do not win; Ohtani, Trout, Rendon and company. The last time the Angels made the playoffs was in 2014. Angels Owner Arturo (Arte) Moreno, who spends more money than the U.S. Congress, would love nothing more than to be in the postseason. Arte is a good guy. Ay Caramba!

AL Central -- Chicago White Sox
The Minnesota Twins have a scary lineup and a good pitching staff, but the Chicago White Sox this season are built not only to win this division but to go all the way to the World Series. This will not be a tight race, the White Sox by plenty. Last year they won the division by 13 games over Cleveland. There is a team now named the Guardians in Cleveland. They just signed José Ramírez, maybe one of the most underrated players in the game. He finally got paid, a multi-year $124 million contract. But this is LaRussa's division. We're related to each other, Tony and I, and were born on exactly the same day, month and year, about 200 miles apart, Havana-Tampa, and not the cigars! This year is like the old Sinatra classic, "My Kind of Town, Chicago!"

AL East -- Winner: Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays might be the team to watch and you cannot close your eyes when you see this team play. They are fun personified. Hard to have more fun than to watch this lineup, their solid pitching and the athleticism is by far the class of this division. They're young talented stars with some experience and they are going to compete in this always the most watched division in baseball. The Tampa Bay Rays will be there and the Boston Red Sox could compete all the way into September as they have Alex Cora, at 46-years-old one of the most intelligent and accomplished managers in the game. The Yankees always find a way, but they will not win the division. They wanted Frankie Montás of the A's and they still might get him, if they are in the race in July-August. If the Yankees win it, that is a surprise. You might get your passport ready, right now, for the postseason because you are not going to the Bronx, you are going to Canada.

NL West -- Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers should win this division again with 100-plus wins. Games in the 2021 MLB season were initially played with limited capacity before being gradually increased to full capacity over the course of the season. Dodger Stadium will be rocking again this year with between 3 to 3.5 million or more in attendance. That's a lot of Dodger Dogs. Further south the Bob Melvin Padres will survive a month or so without injured mega-star Fernando Tatís Jr, but they do not have the depth on their roster, like the Dodgers. It is a must for Tatís to come back healthy and stay healthy all season long. I like the Giants rotation, and even though they lost Kevin Gausman, they picked up Carlos Rodon, and if he can stay healthy, he will help. Their offense is not as good on paper compared to LA or SD. The Giants could have signed Khris Bryant, but he signed with the thin-air Rockies in Colorado. They open the season with their third-baseman, veteran Evan Longoria, on the injured list. Attention Giants fans; do not forget there are more opportunities for a wild card spot this year. But it will be tougher this year to "Beat LA."

NL Central -- St Louis Cardinals
For some reason I like the St. Louis Cardinals, maybe it is because they have the greatest of all baseball uniforms. The reunion between good friends and future Hall of Famers, Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols, might be all the inspiration they need, in a city personally I consider the best, bar-none, for baseball and fans in this country. One of the very best organizations in the game, the Cards always manage to make it interesting. History has it they have won the most World Series in the National League, with eleven, and only the Yankees with 27, have won more in the same city among all teams in history.

NL East -- New York Mets
Do we have enough drama in New York? Never! And this season will have more drama as veteran skipper Buck Showalter takes control as the first year manager of the Metropolitanos. The World Champion Atlanta Braves lost their heart and soul, the great first baseman Freddy Freeman, who was one of the most popular players ever in Atlanta since Larry "Chipper" Jones. They gained the A's Matt Olson, so they did not lose much power there. The Bravos won 88 games last year and won the World Series. I see the Mets ascending and like the improved Philadelphia Phillies, so it could be a three-team race. When everything is right, the Mets might have the best trio of starters in the game, #1 Jacob DeGrom, #2 Matt Scherzer and #3 Chris Bassitt. Whatever happens, I still Love New York. I lived there after my U.S. Army service and there is no city like it.

To expedite things, let's go by the playoffs and land in the World Series.

Adiós muchachos.

League Champion: AL: Toronto Blue Jays, NL: Los Angeles Dodgers. World Series Champion: Toronto Blue Jays

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
